Prayer has been taken off the agenda in Norwich Township.
NORWICH - Prayer has been taken off the agenda in Norwich Township.
Norwich was forced to take the prayer off the official agenda because of a Supreme Court Decision designed to separate church from state. Mayor Larry Martin had been exploring ways to keep the prayer a part of council meetings. He presented council with three options pray before the meeting in a different room, have a silent moment of reflection or just lose the prayer all together. In the end council decided those who want to can pray in a separate room before the official meeting takes place.
Martin says he is happy they found a solution and notes he was disappointed with the Supreme Court ruling. "I wanted to it, I wanted to keep it there for everybody, it is a religious issue and it's something that is personal to everybody so I wanted to make sure everybody had input into it, I don't see it as being a problem but apparently some people do and I think we all have our personal preferences and we have to go with that."
Martin also points to decision from Richmand Hill council to remove the singing of Oh Canada from their council meetings because it has a part in the song about God.
He says this is just going to snowball, and this is one of the reasons why I get so upset over this stuff, because yes people have rights but unfortunately we should all have the same rights.
