Norwich Township Council Approves Schep's Bakeries Expansion Project

After a lengthy discussion Tuesday night, Norwich Township Council approved a zone change application to allow for the construction of a more than 30,000 square-foot warehouse for Schep's Bakeries.

NORWICH TOWNSHIP - Norwich Township Council has decided to approve a zone change application for Schep's Bakeries

Mayor Larry Martin says the owner bought the property next door with the intention of building a more than 30,000 square-foot warehouse for storage.

"Right now I believe they have three separate buildings rented to store some of their supplies in. It would make it much more efficient and beneficial if they could store it all on the same property so that's where they're coming from."

Township Council approved the project Tuesday night. Multiple residents spoke up against the project, with traffic control on Base Line being one of the main concerns.

Martin says one suggestion was to allow for access on Norwich Road, but Oxford County Council would have to sign off on it first.

"If the County refuses to give them access off of Norwich Road that would put the access back on Base Line and the people there really do not want it there because Base Line is not a big enough road for large trucks turning."

Martin says nothing is set in stone at this time, adding those against the project have 20 days to file an appeal through the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal. He expects the project will move forward if no one files an appeal and if County Council approves it.

Schep's Bakeries received a $1.9 million FedDev Ontario grant for expansion back in March, 2020.
