OPP officers will be on the lookout for distracted drivers, impaired drivers, speedsters, and those who are not wearing a seatbelt.

WEST REGION - The Civic Holiday long weekend has arrived, so lots of people will be hitting the roads for a summer getaway.

OPP officers will be out and about as well, watching for the big four causes of serious and fatal crashes on OPP patrolled roads.

In a video posted on the OPP West Region X page, Sergeant Ed Sanchuk said they don't want a repeat of last year.

"During last year's Civic Holiday long weekend, many drivers made unsafe choices resulting in over 3,500 speeding charges, over 500 seatbelt related charges, over 70 distracted driving charges, and over 200 impaired driving charges. Unfortunately, there were also nine vehicle related fatalities over the long weekend."

In another video posted to the OPP West Region X page, Constable Andrew Gamble also had this reminder for drivers out there.

"If you see a police cruiser, fire truck, ambulance, or designated roadside service vehicle stopped with its emergency lights activated, please slow down and move over when it is safe to do so. We want to get home safely just like you."

If you come across an emergency vehicle that is approaching you with its lights flashing, you have to slow down and move to the right side of the road.
