OPP are putting local students through RIDE programs to raise awareness on marijuana.
PARIS - The OPP in Brant County conducted RIDE programs on Wednesday.
Acting Sergeant and Interim Community Safety Coordinator for the West Region OPP Ken Johnston says they set up the RIDE programs on the first day of cannabis legalization outside of the High School in Paris.
"We purposely set up in front of the Paris District High School during the time frame when all of the kids would be going out for lunch to raise awareness. We wanted to hammer home the message that impaired driving is impaired driving, whether it's impaired by drug or impaired by alcohol, it's all still impaired driving."
Johnston says they did the RIDE programs with the Brant EMS, Fire, the Health Unit, Paris Community Policing and the Mental Health Unit.
"So we brought everybody together out there and what we did is we brought a lot of literature for people and we were able to answer some questions that people had but the main purpose of this was really to push the fact home that impaired driving by drug or by alcohol is the same criminal charge and the same consequences can come from those."
Johnston says they did not discover any impaired drivers during the RIDE check on Wednesday. He notes officers will be on the lookout for impaired drivers and the Festive Ride season will start next month.
