A young boy narrowly escaped being hit by a car on Thursday after it sped past a school bus waiting for passengers.
A 6-year old child is lucky to be alive today after nearly being struck by a car while walking home from school.
Norfolk County OPP were contacted by a concerned parent on November 22, just after 8am, after they reportedly witnessed a vehicle failing to stop at a bus stop while the stop arm and lights flashing.
Upon further investigation, police confirmed that a white vehicle passed the bus as it was picking up passengers.
A young boy was preparing to cross the road when parents noticed that the vehicle was not slowing down. Luckily, they managed to prevent him from crossing the road.
Police say that this was a very dangerous action that would have had fatal consequences if the child had finished crossing the road.
Constable Ed Sanchuk of Norfolk County OPP says drivers need to be more careful.
"This law is in place to protect our most valuable resource; young children. Passing a stopped school bus is not only against the law; it is a potential lethal decision. Taking a few extra minutes behind a stopped school bus can prevent lifelong regret of injuring or killing a child."
Police would like to take this opportunity to remind all drivers to stop in front of school buses while lights are flashing and to wait until the signals are turned off and the bus is in motion. Failure to do so can result in a fine no less than $400 and up to $2000 on the first offence, and a fine between $1000 and $4000 and potential imprisonment for all subsequent offences. 6 demerit points will also be added to your driver's licence.
