Oxford County Council Weighs In On Energy

Oxford County council has provided their feedback on the proposed regulatory changes governing certain types of renewable energy generation facilities.

OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council have added their input on proposed regulatory changes governing certain types of renewable energy generation facilities.

Council submitted their comments as part of the Environmental Bill of Rights Registry process. Warden David Mayberry talks about some of the items they wanted to address.

"Whether in all cases, the 50 foot restriction from property lines always makes sense, so an example would be if you want to put solar panels over an outdoor parking garage for people to charge up their cars, and we're thinking down the road, the parking garage could be covered in solar panels and then people could charge their cars right where they park."

Mayberry says they also had some questions about agricultural lands.

"They are coming down pretty hard on agricultural land and not being able to use agricultural land for solar panels and we have questioned in some cases if that would make sense. An example would be in a gravel pit that isn't going to rehabilitated for farming, would it make sense for a landowner to put a few solar panels on that."

Overall the County supports the Province's direction in removing physical and financial barriers to renewable energy delivery. The comments, to be submitted as part of the Environmental Bill of Rights Registry process, consider the effects of the Province’s proposed changes on the County’s planned pilot projects for virtual net metering.
