Oxford County Won't See A White Christmas

The unusually mild temperatures are breaking records for December.

If you're dreaming of a white Christmas in Oxford County, keep dreaming.

Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment Canada Geoff Coulson says that December of 2015 has been shocking to say the least. "I haven't really seen these numbers temperature wise for a month of December ever. We have had an average temperature of 3.5 degrees Celsius. The long term average temperature for the month of December is in the area is -2.6. We are well above the current record for mildest December which was 1.5 degrees set back in 1982 and again in 2006."

Some Heart FM Listeners have even reported noticing some confused flowers hanging in during the mild weather. "There could be some ramifications for agriculture, even ramifications in terms of people whose livelihood depend on the winter like conditions," Coulson says. "By Sunday and Monday as well as over the coming days we do anticipate temperatures getting back to a little closer to more seasonal values. There are already some indications that we could see the temperatures bouncing back up again as we get towards New Year's Eve and January 1st."

It doesn't look like we could be seeing the white stuff for some time yet. "No major snow systems on the near term horizons, at least that I have seen over the next week to 10 days," Coulson says. "We know the Great Lakes are running warmer than normal: there is very little ice on the lakes right now, that leads to favourable conditions for lake effect snow. If we get that really cold air coming down from the north it will very likely be record setting across much of southern Ontario."

Coulson added that due to the cold ground temperatures and warm air dense fog will continue, so take care on the roadways this holiday season.
