Oxford OPP Check Vehicles in Tillsonburg

After checking nearly 600 vehicles, 30 were unlocked, among those 7 had purses clearly visible

OXFORD COUNTY - OPP Officers are concerned with the amount of unlocked vehicles in the area.

Over the weekend Oxford OPP made a trip to Tillsonburg, and Constable Stacey Culbert explains how the County did fair in the check.  "Our auxiliary members from Oxford OPP visited parking lots at the Tillsonburg Mall, Sobey's, and Zehrs where there were several vehicles that were left unlocked.  We had 30 vehicles that were left unlocked, and we targeted close to 600 vehicles that were checked, around 590."

Constable Culbert says no matter what, you have to remember to lock your vehicle otherwise thieves will take advantage.  "We understand that people are probably more in a bit of a rush this time of year, but the fact is that you are buying more items and those items are now in your cars.  There were 7 or 8 purses that were in plain sight, including purses and wallets, all it takes is an opportunity for a criminal to come by and check to see if the door is open."

Electronic devices in including phones, and GPS's were the main items they witnessed in vehicles as well as overflowing cups of change.  Constable Culbert provides tips on how to keep your contents in your car safe, and what to do if someone is breaking in.  "Make sure that every time you are leaving your vehicle you are rolling up your windows, keeping your valuables out of sight, put them in the trunk, cover them with a blanket, pocket your keys, and don't get into the habit of leaving your keys.  If you have the key fob that has a red panic button, press that button, it will draw attention and then make sure you immediately call for police to attend."
