Oxford Remembers Continues WWI Events

Oxford Remembers continues to commemorate the 100th anniversary of WWI through 100 events.

OXFORD COUNTY - To acknowledge the 100 year anniversary of World War One, Oxford County has created Oxford Remembers.

Different municipalities have teamed together to provide 100 events spanning 5 years to commemorate Oxford County's role during the First World War.  Curator of the Woodstock Museum, Karen Houston, explains how those that remained at home assisted in the war. "The war itself was on for 5 years, so that means basically 20 events for each year. It is all across the community, the exhibit this year on WWI is looking on the home front and how much money was raised, how much was actually going over in goods, as well as people leaving from Oxford County."

Numerous events will be taking place in the community according to Houston that will include a walk through a rural cemetery in Ingersoll. "Norwich has the actual WWI exhibit up right now. One of the troops from Canada they actually had a mascot, which was a bear, and that was the start of Winnie the Pooh.  They are actually celebrating this connection, also very interesting is the story of In Flanders Fields that is happening in Tavistock, so there are a number of things continuing to happen."

Houston spoke with Heart FM on why it essential to remember what this group of people accomplished. "If you don't remember, then you forget how big a cost it actually was to us as a society. There is an entire generation of people who were scarred by this, and it is not just a few people. If you look at the cenotaph you get an idea of just how many people never returned or were affected in some way from their experience."
