Pittock Conservation Area Celebrates Another Successful Family Fishing Week

Still time to teach the kids how to fish without a licence at the Conservation Area

WOODSTOCK - It has never been easier to cast a line and reel especially for the first time at Pittock Conservation Area.  As Fishing Week wraps up tomorrow over 250 people have participated over the past week that started with a fishing tournament.  Conservation Area Clerk, Katie Evel, explains why this is a great opportunity for those just beginning to fish, to have fun on the water.  "It is a really great opportunity for families where they just want to come out and try fishing, and don't necessarily want to get a licence just for this one-off opportunity.  We have had a very successful week with having people coming in and trying it out for the first time."

Evel spoke with Heart FM about how well the fishing tournament went that had TV personality Bob Izumi in attendance.  "We had about 256 registered come out, and throughout the week definitely we have seen an increase in attendance.  We have also seen an increase in families taking advantage of our tackle share program, that allows families to come in and borrow fishing equipment to try out fishing for the first time."

The week dedicated to the popular sport of fishing revolves around the importance of getting kids out of the house and not depending on an electronic screen for entertianment according to Evel.  "The whole idea behind this Ontario Family Fishing Week is to really get people to get outside and take advantage of the amazing outdoor recreational opportunities that we have out on the water.  Getting kids away from their computers and get them outdoors, if we can teach them about fish conservation along the way then that is a pretty good thing as well."

Evel also added that it has been a very successful week and not only can you fish but you can also take advantage of everything else the Conservation has to offer from canoeing to hiking on the trails.  While many fish are still for the taking over the final two days the largest caught was recorded to be a 49cm long bass.
