PARIS - Postmedia Network Inc. announced today they are laying off about 80 employees and permanently closing 15 community newspapers.
The newspaper closures are happening in Manitoba and Ontario and the company states they are not financially viable.
The Paris Star is one of the community newspapers in the region that will be closing for good. Other community newspapers in the Province that are permanently closing include the Kingsville Reporter, Lakeshore News (Windsor-Essex), LaSalle Post, Napanee Guide, Tecumseh Shoreline Week and Tilbury Times.
This will result in 30 permanent job losses and the company is temporarily laying off 50 people in sales for three months. After three months they will re-evaluate the decision.
The CEO of Postmedia Andrew MacLeod has agreed to take a 30 percent pay cut and they will be asking other employees in the company to take pay cuts as well. Those cuts can range between 5% and 20% depending on their position.
