Lots of boats will gather at Pottahawk Point will take place this Sunday.
NORFOLK COUNTY - The Norfolk OPP will be out on the water this weekend for Pottahawk Sunday.
Officers will be on patrol to make sure people are making safety the number one priority while on Lake Erie this Sunday. Each year, OPP officers respond to a number of incidents at Pottahawk Point, many involving alcohol-related issues and impaired boating. Officers will be present at local marinas and patrolling the water to ensure a safe experience for everyone.
Community Engagement Officer Andrew Gamble says officers will also conduct random boat checks throughout the day to ensure they have the required safety equipment.
"Our goal isn't to put a damper on the day - it's to help make sure everyone gets home the same way they left. Whether you're on the water or behind the wheel, the choices you make matter. Plan ahead, look out for each other, and let safety lead the way."
The Norfolk OPP has the following the reminders for those planning to attend Pottahawk Point this weekend:
- Wear a lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD) while boating. It's too late once you're in the water.
- Never boat while impaired. Boating under the influence carries the same penalties as impaired driving on the road.
- Ensure your boat is equipped with all the required safety equipment.
- Check the weather forecast before departure.
- Let someone know where you're going and when you plan to return.
- Have reliable communication (e.g., VHF radio or fully charged cell phone).
- Carry your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) at all times.
- Designate a sober operator with a valid PCOC for your return trip.
