Protesters lined Carnegie Street in Ingersoll on Wednesday to send a message that the community is not in favour of the proposed landfill.
INGERSOLL - About 100 people came out to protest in front of the Walker Environmental Group building in Ingersoll on Wednesday.
They were carry signs and encouraging motorists to honk their horn in support. Ingersoll Mayor Ted Comiskey was one of the protestors who showed up yesterday. They wanted to make sure it was clear that people in this area are not in favour of a proposed landfill. The protest was done in part because of comments made by Premier Doug Ford last week where he said the Province will not put a landfill in an area where people clearly don't want it.
Oxford People Against the Landfill President Bryan Smith says they planned this protest to around the final community Liason meeting that Walker hosted.
"None of the Walker people came out to talk to us, some people who came in for the meeting did stop and talk to us when they were heading in and some people were sliding in at the last minute to be on time for the meeting, so they didn't stop and talk."
Smith says they had a lot of support for the protest.
"We had close to hundred people show up for the protest and we had lot's of people come by that were honking and waving on the road, we also had a landowner who came out and said it is all right if you guys want to stand on my lawn, I don't want to see them across the road everyday, so we had lot's of support from the neighbours."
Smith says they are still waiting anxiously for a decision from the Minister of Environment, however he did say they are optimistic after the comments from the Minister and the Premier last week in Oxford Centre.
