Aylmer Meat Packers will receive a $3.5-million cheque from the province after the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled last week that the government must pay a duty of care to the company.
AYLMER - The Ontario Court of Appeal has ordered the province to pay $3.5-million to Aylmer Meat Packers.
The three-judge panel says the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs engaged in a "litany of bureaucratic ineptitude" back in 2003. The company was part of a tainted meat investigation and the government occupied the abattoir for 19 months.
The appeal case states that the owners of the Aylmer Meat Packers lost the opportunity to sell the plant due to the investigation.
The Court of Appeal ruled last week that the province owes a duty of care to the company and the province says it's reviewing the decision.
