A recent study from Health Canada shows that Oxford County has high levels of Radon.
OXFORD COUNTY - Southwestern Public Health is urging residents to get their homes checked out for Radon.
Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada, next to smoking. Public Health Inspector Kayla Elms says a recent study from Health Canada says Radon is prevalent in our region.
"And they found that both the Elgin and St. Thomas area and the Oxford County area were above the national levels for Radon."
According to Health Canada’s most recent Cross-Canada Survey of Radon Concentrations in Homes, 7.6% of homes in Elgin-St.Thomas and 11.5% of homes in Oxford County have high levels of radon. These rates compare to a national average of 6.9%. The only way to determine if your home has radon is by testing for it, a simple process that anyone can do.
The best time to test for radon in the home is in the winter and spring months when windows are more likely to be closed and the level of radon more easily detected. Southwestern Public Health is conducting a study to determine the levels of radon in homes located within Oxford County, Elgin County and the City of St. Thomas. For this study, free radon test kits are going to be provided to randomly chosen home owners who meet the study criteria.
After the testing period, the test kits will be collected and analyzed and the results as well as information on reducing radon exposure will be provided to the home owners. To participate in the study, click here for more information.
