Reach Out to a Senior This Holiday Season

Residents are being reminded how lonely and isolating the holidays can be for our senior citizens.

Many of us can get caught up in the hustle and bustle at this time of year, but it's important we also spare a moment for our elderly loved one.

Executive Director of the South Gate Centre, Chris Cunningham, talks about the challenges many deal with at this time of year. "Christmas is such a magical wonderful time of year, but we also have to stop and remember that for many they have had a lot of hardships and sad times, losses in their lives and this can also be one of the highest times of depressions and isolation."

Seniors can feel the sting of isolation very keenly at this time of year, and so Cunningham is encouraging everyone to come out and see what South Gate has to offer. "People are always welcome, first time for everything is free, and you can actually check out all 64 different programs and not have to pay a cent. We've got coffee that is always on for free, we have got a cafe that serves hot lunches from Monday to Friday. It can be trying time for some people so sometimes it is just nice to come somewhere, sit back, and feel like you belong."

There is something everyone can do to help our seniors feel loved and welcome at this time of year. Cunningham says a small act of kindness can go a long, long way. "For every day of your joy and happiness unfortunately there are others that are hurting, and if you have a neighbour or anyone in your mix that you know to be alone or elderly I would ask you to reach out make a point of saying hello and having a conversation and it can just be that simple."  She recommends taking over a coffee, sending a Christmas card, and just making sure every member of our community feels the love at this time of year.
