Red Scarves in Ingersoll For World AIDS Day

If you notice a red scarf in Ingersoll today you are encouraged to spare a thought for those living with HIV/AIDS

INGERSOLL - Downtown Ingersoll will be filled with red today.

Public Health Nurse Gayle Milne explains why red scarves will be tied around trees. "People hand knit or craft red scarves then they are put around trees on World AIDS Day, or around World AIDS Day. People are welcome to take those scarves and wear them - the whole purpose is that the red scarf looks like the red ribbon which is the symbol for HIV/AIDS awareness."

This is the first time Ingersoll has hosted the Red Scarf Project event - Tillsonburg and Woodstock held them in the past. Milne spoke to Heart FM on why they chose Ingersoll to hold it this year. "This will be our third year doing the HIV/AIDS promotion through the red scarf promotion, but it is the first year we are doing it in Ingersoll. It is just important to us that we included Ingersoll as well in this promotion, just so that the awareness raising spreads throughout our community."

Milne believes it is important to continue to keep the annual tradition alive. "I think every opportunity that people have to discuss it is a good one. That helps to reduce stigma and discrimination for people who are living with HIV, so people understand how it is transmitted and people should not be feared if they do have HIV."

Anyone who wishes to get themselves checked out can do so at Oxford County Public Health or at their family physician.

The scarves will be available all day today - if you need a scarf you are encouraged to take one, read the card attached, and spare a moment to think about HIV/AIDS.
