Scammers posing as out of town landlords
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police are warning residents about a rental property scam in the city.
Over the past two days police say they have received a pair of complaints about a scammer posing as a landlord on websites such as Kijiji or Craigslist saying they are out of the country but still require a deposit on their property. Police say once the money is paid through a transfer the new tenant discovers there isn't a rental available with no way to get their money back.
Police are advising residents to be very cautious when conducting business on the internet and never agree to send money without first meeting with the landlord and looking at the rental property.
Luckily police say in both cases investigated no money was lost.
