OXFORD COUNTY - Farmers are being warned of an elevated risk of the avian flu this fall.
What is transmitted through poultry operations, it has caused a headache for farmers in Oxford County as 3 farms have been infected over the past year. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency released a report stating the cooler weather will allow the virus to live longer prompting area farms to be on alert. Risk factors for the virus to spread are poultry that are housed outside or have outside access, and the use of shared equipment between farms.
Other bio-security measures that are being taken include rotating outdoor and access schedule, and discouraging wild birds from mingling with your flock. Poultry owners are being asked to tour their facility to ensure a clean work space. Although the cases are mainly detected in poultry it has the ability to infect humans. More ways to avoid the virus is to dispose of dead birds every day, and change your clothes regularly if in the barn. The Avian Flu circulates in wild birds that had many farms to go into quarantine over the past year.
