Rural Residents Paying Close Attention to Tonight's TVDSB Meeting

Two big issues impacting rural education are on the agenda at tonight's TVDSB meeting.

The Thames Valley District School Board meeting will be closely watched by rural residents tonight.

Two of the big issues at hand include the resumption of the Rural Education Task Force. The TVDSB has removed the Task Force from their web site after a draft report was made public. You can read more about this online here.

The other issue is a report looking to remove a trustee from Middlesex County and moving it to the City of London, which would leave only 5 rural seats on the school board. When the board first formed in 1998 after an amalgamation of the school boards in London, Elgin, Middlesex and Oxford. A staff report shows that Middlesex should lose a trustee based on representation by population.

Vice Chair of Rural Education Task Force and Zorra Township Mayor Marcus Ryan says this would mean one less voice at the table.

"It would mean 7 London trustees, 5 rural trustees and 1 First Nations and Inuit trustee. So from a politics perspective, votes at the board, it would mean a stricter majority of London trustees and not for the County and I think the rural education issues are much more similar for Oxford, Elgin and Middlesex, so it would effectively be one less voice for us, even though it wouldn't be one less Oxford Trustee."

The school board meeting starts at 7:00 pm tonight.
