Senior Duped Out of $27,000

A senior citizen from Tillsonburg is out $27,000 after falling victim to a scam where they were asked to send money to Lebanon.

TILLSONBURG - A senior citizen from Tillsonburg is out $27,000 after falling victim to a scam where they were asked to send money to Lebanon.

Oxford OPP say the senior had gotten several calls from the suspects who claimed to be the police, a lawyer and a relative. They told the senior that a loved one was in trouble with the law and they needed the cash to Lebanon through Western Union to get them home.

Constable Lisa Naranscik tells Heart FM what you should do if you ever get a call like this.

"If anybody ever gets a call hang up, and if you feel inclined that you have to listen to what they say, check the facts before you ever transfer, phone police, police will check into the information it or help you figure out how to verify it and please never send money unless you a 100 percent certain you know where it is going."

Naranscik says unfortunately in this case the senior handed over the money before checking the facts.

"Scams are becoming more common and the public should be aware and cautious when receiving such calls requesting money immediately.  Family and friends should share information about this type and other types of scams so when they receive a call like this they are prepared and simply HANG UP! Never transfer any money before checking out the facts, and verifying the information.  Call police for help, police do not phone people requesting money."

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Center is a great resource to contact for any information on the types of scams that are out there and known to be used 1-888-495-8501.
