A Brant County man has recently found himself at the helm of a sexual exploitation and extortion social media scam.
BRANT COUNTY - If your new online love interest begins asking for nude photos or videos...you should think twice before you hit send.
Brant OPP say a they are investigating situation that found a Brant County male resident the victim of extortion.
Constable Ken Johnston outlines the details in this case.
"This gentleman was online with them for a very short period of time, was asked for some intimate video which he provided. Then immediately the person wanted money transferred to them, or they would put it on YouTube, or over the internet anyway."
OPP are constantly trying to push the message to people, that you need to protect yourself while on social media and to remember that you lose control of anything that you send over the internet.
Johnston says people often think the police can easily find the perpetrators, but that isn't always the case.
"A lot of times, we can narrow it down to a particular region or particular, but beyond that, it's pretty difficult to get exactly who it is or where it is. It's not that we don't investigate everything that comes through, we do."
He adds that young people are a target with these scams and parents need to educate their kids on the dangers. Police encourage anyone who may have found themselves in a similar scam to contact them right away and to never offer the money that is being demanded.
