County shuts down Odour Control Facility, takes other measures after resident complaints
Oxford County has shut down an odour control facility that was causing a putrid
smell on the 11th Line.
Residents complained to the city and county this
summer about smells coming from an odour control facility the County operates
near their homes.
The short term fix includes injecting chemicals at the
Embro Pumping Station, and the County for now, has shut down the Woodstock Odour
Control Facility.
Public Works Director Rob Walton says those adjustments
should already be making an impact. "Over the colder winter months, the
hydrogen sulfide and these other compounds are much easier to control than they
are in the hotter weather months. So, for this next period of time we are going
to add more make-up water to reduce the travel time in that pipe from Embro to
Woodstock. And we're adding a chemical to the pumping station in Embro which
does react with the sewage and reduces the formation of these
chemicals."
For a long term solution Walton says the County will have a
further look at a long term fix in the spring. "Staff met with a number of
those residents today (WED) and with the Ministry of Environment and discussed
this whole plan with them. It was a good meeting and we're looking forward to
coming back to council next April with a recommendation for a
solution."
The odour has been identified as Hydrogen Sulfide, and is not
a threat to the health of those in the area.
