Spring Melt Underway in Oxford County

The UTRCA is warning everyone to stay off the ice this weekend as the snow melt continues in our region.

OXFORD COUNTY - The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is reminding residents to be cautious as the snow melt continues.

The Spring melt is well underway in our region and with daytime highs expected to hit double digits next week, it is going to get even worse.

The UTRCA says most of the snow back is expected to melt next week, causing water levels in streams and ponds to rise. They are not expecting any serious flooding in our region. Low lying flood plain areas may inundated in some areas. Localized flooding is also possible in areas with poor drainage or along smaller watercourses blocked with ice and snow.

UTRCA officials are monitoring the situation, and will report on any changing conditions as necessary. Any ice cover right now is weakened and unstable and people should stay off the ice.

Also the banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery right now and pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from all watercourses and off of frozen water bodies.
