Thousands of Air Canada flight attendants could go on strike Saturday morning.
CANADA - The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has provided a 72-hour strike notice to Air Canada.
This means 10,000 unionized flight attendants could walk off the job as of 12:58 a.m. this Saturday, if a new deal is not reached before then.
After hearing about the pending strike action, Air Canada issued a lockout notice to CUPE at 1:30 a.m. The airline will start cancelling flights tomorrow, so it can cease operations of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights by Saturday. Travellers with cancelled flights will be notified and they will be eligible for a full refund.
Air Canada said yesterday that it reached an impasse with contract negotiations with the union. CUPE on the other hand, said it declined a proposal from the airline to send the dispute to binding arbitration.
To address ongoing labour uncertainty following strike notice by CUPE, Air Canada’s flight attendant union, a lock out notice was issued to CUPE today, effective Aug. 16. We will begin implementing our contingency plan to gradually begin an orderly wind down of operations.
