The annual march shines a light on gender based violence.
TILLSONBURG - It's time to Take Back the Night in Oxford County.
The annual Take Back the Night March will be taking place this evening with Tillsonburg hosting the event this year. It alternates between Woodstock, Ingersoll and Tillsonburg each year.
Sophie Foster is the Public Education and Fundraising Coordinator for Ingamo Homes, and she's also a member of the Domestic Abuse Resource Team of Oxford County (DART Oxford). She says everyone will gather at the clock tower on Bridge Street West.
"If you come to the clock tower in Tillsonburg for around 6:30 p.m. we'll have tables so you can build your own poster and make your own signs. At 6:45 p.m. we'll have some speeches and a poem from a local poet which will be fantastic."
She adds the march itself will begin at 7:00 p.m.
"We're just going to to a 20 to 25 minute walk around Tillsonburg where we'll chant with megaphones and noisemakers. The idea is that we're going to take back the night."
The closing ceremony will begin at 7:45 p.m.
Take Back the Night is a global movement that dates back to the 1970s. Women felt unsafe walking the streets alone at night, so communities across the globe host a march during the third week of September to shine a light on gender based violence.
