Teen Circle Bereavement Program at Sakura House

Teen Circle is a 6 week bereavement program, which aims to help teens cope with the loss of a loved one through open discussions and therapeutic art activities.

Youth dealing with the loss of a loved one can now turn to the Teen Circle bereavement program at Sakura House.

Throughout the 6 week program, trained volunteers and staff members will help the teens through open discussions and therapeutic art activities.

Anne Marie Wallace-Phillips, Coordinator of Hospice Bereavement and Support with VON says it will provide a safe environment for them to open up.

"What we find especially in society is we don't talk about death, it's a taboo subject and we want the conversation to be open for teens. Many times, we sort of not really shut down teens but we don't really validate that they are grieving."

Each meeting will be mandatory and follow a specific theme;

Week 1 (Monday February 12th) - All About Me
Week 2 (Monday February 19th) - The Understanding of Death
Week 3 (Monday February 26th) - Life Without the Deceased
Week 4 (Monday March 5th) - Caring for Grief Emotions
Week 5 (Monday March 12th) - Fears and Coping
Week 6 (Monday March 19th) - Goodbye

Wallace-Phillips says each participant will also receive a book to take home.

"At the end of the session, teens will be given a journal by Dr. Alan Wolfelt to take home and continue the work they have done in the program."

Those interested must contact Wallace-Phillips before Monday, when the first session will take place. You can call 519-537-8515 with the extension number 3 or email annemarie.wallace-phillips@von.ca.

It's free to attend and for those between the ages of 13 and 16.
