The Race Is On to Save Ingersoll's Carnegie Building

$20 000 needs to be raised to save a historic building in Ingersoll.

INGERSOLL - After being closed for nearly a year the Carnegie building in Ingersoll is in need of desperate repair if it will ever reopen.

$20 000 needs to be raised by October in order to save the 105 year old building that was one of the 125 libraries built in Canada with money from Andrew Carnegie. President of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, Christina Eus, spoke with Heart FM about what needs to happen before anything can go back into the aging building: "Part of the stipulation from the town in them making the repairs is that we come up with a use for the building. Our primary concern with the use for the building is that whatever goes in is going to pay respect to the building itself; the history that resides within it, as well as something that's going to give back to the community - that the community can really benefit from."

The building that now sits empty and is one of the 95 buildings still standing in Canada that was built in 1910. Replacing portions of the brick work and a new heating system is what the majority of the funds will be going towards with $520 raised to date. Eus explains why she wants to see this project finalized. "So many people have been touched as part of that library, and as of right now we need to get the information out and get as much support as we possibly can in order to have this building saved as part of Ingersoll's heritage." Council has supported the decision to wait until October to see if the group can raise the money to save the century old building.

Eus outlines what needs to be be repaired, including re-doing the brick exterior. "Council still owns the building and has been neglecting on the maintenance. They have set aside the certain amount of funds with our efforts. With showing this $20 000 it will help them put more money towards the repairs and we are looking to get that heating system replaced before winter comes."
