The family have moved locations to where less predators could affect the 6 cygnets
WOODSTOCK - A family of swans are attracting lot's of attention at Southside Park.
Some people were concerned when the family of two swans and 6 cygnets moved from the park. Parks and Recreation supervisor Chris Kern says the swans moved on their own accord to the Golf Course and will likely head back down the river to the park when they are a bit older. "The cygnets are ok, they are up in the golf course, that's where the swans are raising them this year, there still are six of them, they are healthy and have been to the vet, they are just swimming up at the golf course and having a great time." Kern says the swans moved the cygnets to the golf course for a reason, mainly he believes because the area has fewer predators. They will stay up there until the cygnets are old enough or big enough that they won't be prey.
Kern says they are telling the public to take pictures and enjoy the swans and their babies. However the parents are very protective and it is not a good idea to approach them or feed them. The swans were brought into Southside 12 years ago and help to control the goose population. Kern says they had to take the swans to the vet as part of the Migratory Bird Permit. " You have to pinion their wings, so they can't fly away because they aren't native to this area, they are native to Europe, so part of the permit requires us to vaccinate the birds and pinion them so they can't fly away."
