Art Beat: The Ripple Effect launched at the Woodstock Art Gallery on Friday, an artists-in-schools exhibition and mentorship program celebrating the creativity and imagination of local students.

WOODSTOCK- A new virtual exhibition at the Woodstock Art Gallery on Friday. It celebrates the creativity and imagination of local students.

Art Beat: The Ripple Effect is the Gallery's artists-in-schools exhibition and mentorship program, which was offered in partnership with Oxford County school boards.

Mme. Pilon’s Grade 7 class from Woodstock's Roch Carrier French Immersion Public School worked with London fibre artist Paulina Szczesny this year, continuing patterned block relief printmaking project.

A Grade 12 class at St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Woodstock also participates, working with London printmaking artist Jessica Woodward. Woodward facilitated a collaborative surrealism block relief printmaking project.

Head of Education Stephanie Porter says ART BEAT empowers students to share their thoughts, creative process and achievements.

“Working alongside a professional artist, students discover a deep appreciation for the arts, develop a greater understanding of the elements and principles of design, and explore new ideas connected to their lives and experiences."

The exhibition was to open as a part of Youthquake, the WAG’s annual young artists showcase. However, the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Porter says the Gallery decided to put the exhibition online.

"Although it is bittersweet that the WAG is unable to celebrate the achievements of our young artists in person this year, we are very excited to share their hard work with the community virtually."

You can see the virtual exhibition here.
