Sergeant Jillian Johnson from Oxford OPP has some spring-related reminders and advice to avoid fraud to share during the March edition of Tip Tuesday
OXFORD COUNTY - Spring has officially arrived, and that was one of the topics discussed during the latest edition of Tip Tuesday with the OPP.
Believe it or not, Sergeant Jill Johnson says they see more crashes when it's nice outside.
"I know with the snowy weather and even the rainy weather, you're paying attention a little bit more. It's one of things where if it's a nice sunny day, there seems to be more crashes than a rainy, cloudy day. I don't know if that's because people are maybe just not paying attention because it's nice and sunny so you're not in the zone as much?"
She is reminding everyone to be aware of their surroundings whether you're a driver, a motorcyclist, cyclist or a pedestrian. Please make sure you share the road, and parents should remind their children to wear a helmet before getting on their bikes.
Lots of people are also taking their nice vehicles out of storage around this time of the year.
Some vehicles out there have improper mufflers which can cause quite a bit of noise. If you come across one, Sergeant Johnson says you should report it.
"As many details as possible is best, so make sure that you can narrow in maybe a time of day or certain days (whether its a weekday or a weekend) and what location this is happening at. This kind of goes for anything that needs to be reported."
It also helps if you can provide a description of the vehicle and the person behind the wheel.
If enough reports are filed, the OPP can conduct a focused patrol, also known as a blitz, targeting the issue in a specific area.
Fraud Prevention Month is also coming to an end. Sergeant Johnson says officers have been doing whatever they can to shine a light on scams in the area, but it's not enough. She's encouraging everyone to do their own research and talk to their loved ones about it.
"Find one that you don't maybe know as much about and share that information with your family members and friends to spread that around. We can't do it all, we can't protect everybody, and I don't know how we can reach everybody that we're not reaching yet. So that's my ask to your listeners, make sure you're connecting with your family and friends to keep them safe from these frauds too."
The most popular frauds in Oxford County include the Grandparent Scam and the Romance Scam.
The next Tip Tuesday is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29th and you can submit a question online here.
