A lawyer from Toronto will not have to serve jail time after a viral video showed him attacking a family and hurling racist insults at a family in St. Thomas.
ST. THOMAS - The man who attacked a Colombian family in St. Thomas was sentenced today.
37 year old Mark Phillips pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm. He was given a three year conditional discharge and must complete 240 hours of community service. The sentence means he will avoid jail time.
Phillips was caught on camera using a baseball bat to attack the family and shouting racist slurs at them, claiming they were from Isis. Phillips claimed the attacks were caused by drug use and that he was high on marijuana all the time, causing him to be in a drug induced psychosis.
Phillips was said to be agitated that day after getting into a verbal altercation with an employee at a Tim Horton's in Woodstock, prior to the bat attack.
