All flags have been lowered to half-mast at schools in our area. They'll remain lowered through the week, in mourning the school shooting in Connecticut. Any members of TVDSB's Traumatic Events Response Team are on standby and will be available for any school throughout the district that requests support. However, Dr. Sally Christiensen says that hasn't been a concern today, as she says students are less likely to be traumatized than adults. "Grown-ups are much more aware and thinking of possibilities, what could happen, how would it affect their own lives if this were to happen. Because we reflect more on those things, it's much more disturbing to us for longer. Children on the other hand, when they go to school they're looking for their routines and their activities." Regardless, Dr. Christiensen says parents should minimize their children's exposure to information about the shooting. "We need to minimize our children's exposure to those events because we can by accident cause children to be traumatized by repeated exposure to TV images or repeated news stories. It didn't happen to them, but it's because they keep experiencing it, it can have a traumatic effect." Teachers have been advised not to go out of their way to talk about the shooting, but to address the situation truthfully if students bring it up.
