The City of Woodstock is going to invest $50,000 in research and development to see if it makes sense to rehabilitate the Lions's Pool or if they should invest in an alternative site.
WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock is not going to spend any money to repair the Lions Pool at this point in time.
Last night they decided to not spend the $900,000 that is needed to keep the pool operational in the future. Instead they are going to spend $50,000 towards research and development.
Mayor Trevor Birtch says the money will come from the City's reserves.
"This will go towards planning and coming up with cost estimates for doing either the repair and rehab at the Lions Pool, or looking for an alternative site, such as at our existing Southside indoor pools."
Birtch says this will help save them money on the capital budget.
"So that $900,000.00 borrowed with interest effectively costs us $180,000.00 a year for ten years, so we'll see a reduction in the debt expenses at this point."
Director of Parks and Recreation Brian Connors says the study will look at the best options for the City.
"The design study would be a cost comparison with the Lions Pool Rehabilitation, with an expansion to Southside pool, for an outdoor pool at Southside, that would have the opportunity to turn into an indoor pool down the road and converting the wading pool into a splash pad."
As it currently stands the pool will open this summer as scheduled, however the future of the pool will depend on this research and development.
Heart FM did want to issue a retraction from our previous story which stated that the $900,000 will be put towards the pool repairs at the end of the swimming season.
