The local union representing auto workers in Oxford is worried about potential job losses following the TPP agreement.
The local union fears for automotive jobs now that the Trans Pacific Partnership has reached a tentative deal.
The TPP states that cars may be brought into Canada tariff free as long as they contain 45% content from a TPP region. This is down drastically from the 62.5% under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Unifor Local 88 represents around 3 200 members of the automotive sector in our area and President Dan Borthwick says many of them are looking to the future nervously. "The Trans Pacific Partnership Trade Agreement would put even more job insecurity into our members, and not only our members; the whole automotive sector. In this area we have close to 14 000 jobs in the region."
Prime Minister Stephen Harper says they will be working to attract more global auto makers to Canada, but his track record is not stellar. "I will wait to see what his and his governments' opinions are as to money and investment in the future," says Borthwick. "But if the past is any indication, they haven't been very forthright or productive in securing jobs in the auto sector."
