The WCI senior boys basketball team went 4-1 at OFSAA this week bringing home the Consolation Championship.
WOODSTOCK - The WCI senior boy's basketball team are your 2019 OFSSA Consolation Champions.
The Red Devils went 4-1 at OFSAA and only lost their one game by 1 point at the three day tournament in London. In fact the game they lost had some controversy at the end and they could have easily went 5-0 at the tournament. Assistant Coach Eric Molinaro says the guys are extremely proud to walk away from the tournament with the consolation trophy.
"They set forth that goal going into the game, sometimes teams may be in a let down situation when it comes to a consolation championship but these boys were very inspired and wanted to bring something home for the school."
WCI won the final by beating a private school from the York Region Villanova 57-47. WCI won all four games by double digits. The team that WCI beat in the first game actually went on to win the bronze medal. WCI could have easily had a chance at winning gold or bronze had the second game went there way losing by only 1 point.
Molinaro says they are not going to focus on that though and everyone at the school is pretty excited for the guys today.
"We had a lot of fan support, a lot of people were watching online, I just finished my first period class and we have kids who came to our couple of games and they were talking about the energy, the excitement and how much fun it was to watch our boys play. The boys are exhausted, I had a couple in my first period class and they are just tired from playing a lot of basketball over the last three days and yeah their spirits are high, they are really high and it was a great group of guys to experience that with."
Molinaro says they will receive a banner for making OFSAA that will hang inside the gym and they will likely make one for the consolation championship as well.
