This weekend, people will flock to the Burford Fairgrounds to experience another edition of Wienerfest.
OXFORD COUNTY - The annual Wienerfest event is back for another year.
The event has been around for years, and started as a potluck with a few different wiener dog owners. It has since grown, and there are upwards of 5,000-7,000 people and 1,000 wiener dogs that attend the event. Festivities get underway tomorrow, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Organizer Linda Sonnenburg says the popular wiener race has even higher stakes this year.
"And that's the big thing and the big draw. And I have to tell people, this is not the Running of the Roses. It's not the Kentucky Derby. But yeah, people get very passionate about this. Even more passionate, I think, this year, because we do have a sponsor this year, Raw for Pets Canada is sponsoring, and they have sponsored $100 for the winner."
Sonnenburg says there is a new event this year, which is a spicy hot dog eating contest, and it is a collaboration between Shane Hammond and Van Dyk's.
"Literally, there are five levels of hot sauce, and if you can get to level 5, eat it, keep it down, and not have to drink milk, you win $100."
The event will be taking place at the Burford Fairgrounds, and events tomorrow wrap up at 4:30 p.m. Then, on Sunday, people can enjoy the event from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. If you would like more information about the event, you can go to the Wienerfest website.
