From building a new fire station to adding a 3rd station were discussed at the latest council meeting
WOODSTOCK - The Parkinson Road Fire Station could be entering its final days.
Members of the Woodstock Fire Service were on hand at the latest City Council meeting to discuss a feasibility and design study. Deputy Fire Chief, Jason Whiteley, explains what decision members of council will have to make in what to do with the 41 year old station. "The biggest part of it is a substantial investment, with that much investment we wanted to make sure we were investing our money in the right areas. We wanted to start bringing up the conversation to council about different options, this report just gave us the main options and that would be based on what Council eventually decides."
The station was built in 1974 and Deputy Fire Chief Whiteley provides the main concerns the department has with the fire station. "The station is at its capacity, we can't find any space for doing different things. We need to look at doing a renovation, we're looking at a structure that is going to be here for another 50 to 100 years that's what we meant by a legacy structure. As the city grows what is it going to look like in 5,10,15,20 years the fire service is going to have to meet those needs."
Fire Chief Scott Tegler put forth the study but it was Deputy Fire Chief Whiteley who was hinting at new improvements. "At some point in the growth of this there is going to be a need for a 3rd fire station. Let's start looking and if council ultimately decides that the 3 stations will be it, or they can decide they want to remain with a station fire hall option. This was to start the discussion because there is going to be a substantial investment."
