People might not know the risks associated with drinking, and Southwestern Public Health is encouraging them to learn.

OXFORD COUNTY - Southwestern Public Health is encouraging residents to reflect on their drinking habits.

The Health Unit covers Oxford County, Elgin County, and St. Thomas, and says there are easy-to-use online tools that show the real impact alcohol can have on their health. Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Ninh Tran, says what the stats showed in 2023.

"We are talking about one in five residents experiencing the highest amount of risk for alcohol-related harms."

Dr. Tran says learning the real impact alcohol can have on their health can help make a difference.

"Any bit of cutting back will help from a health perspective as well as a financial perspective."

Tran mentions there are 2 websites people can use in order to make informed decisions about drinking. Those websites are knowalcohol.ca, which is an online resource that focuses on alcohol risks through personalized insights, such as how drinking may affect their risk of chronic disease, sleep, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. It also features an alcohol calculator that simplifies what qualifies as a standard drink, as serving sizes vary widely between beer, wine, and spirits. The other website is rethinkyourdrinking.ca, and it can help you get practical strategies to cut back on alcohol.
