Dr. Peter Fowler was appointed The Order of Canada for his contributions in sports medicine.
WOODSTOCK - A man with strong ties to Woodstock has been appointed The Order of Canada.
Dr. Peter Fowler received the honour for his contributions in sports medicine in Canada.
Dr. Fowler says he was among the first to use an arthroscope to treat injuries to amateur and elite athletes.
"I think I was fortunate when I started my practice. I started my practice after residency and fellowship in 1970, which at that time we saw some new innovations, one of which was the arthroscope, which we could put in joints and first of all make an accurate diagnosis and secondly, and eventually, do the surgery that way. So I was one of the first in this area to take that up and it helped me along our research on knee injuries in particular and other injuries as well, including the shoulder. And I feel that helped me quite a bit because there weren't too many other people doing this."
Dr. Fowler was appointed the Order of Canada last February.
Dr. Fowler grew up in Woodstock and he was also inducted into the Woodstock Sports Wall of Fame for swimming and other lifetime achievements.
"I made it to the Pan American Games where I got a silver medal in 1959, swimming the butterfly lap on the medley relay."
After finishing his residency, Dr. Fowler, along with the late Dr. Jack Kennedy, went on to form the Fowler-Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic in London.
Among Dr. Fowler's other notable achievements include becoming a founding member and president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sport Medicine and serving as Chief Medical Officer to Canada at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
