Woodstock Fire Department Responds To Two Fires In One Night

Woodstock firefighters responded to two structure fires last night, one occurring at a residential detached garage and the other one at Len's Mill Store. They say the damage to the properties is estimated at $40,000 and $200,000 respectively.

WOODSTOCK - Woodstock firefighters responded to two structure fires last night.

The first fire occurred at a residential detached garage where firefighters rushed to the scene and got the fire under control.

The fire started outside the garage after a cigarette was thrown into a mulch area.

The damage to the property is estimated at $40,000.

Later that night firefighters arrived at Len's Mill Store after the alarm was activated. The fire was spreading within the store and on the inside of the exterior wall. The building's sprinkler system kept the fire at bay and a majority of the building was saved.

The damage to the property is estimated at $200,000. The cause of that fire is still under investigation.

Woodstock firefighters want to remind you that if you smoke, or know someone who smokes, please take a moment to learn how to prevent fires involving improperly discarded smoking material:

- Never dispose of cigarette butts in potted planting soil.

-Never flick cigarettes into mulch or shrubbery.

- Dispose of them in a suitable ashtray or bucket with water or sand.

- Ensure designated outside smoking areas have an appropriate noncombustible container, ashtray or bucket.

- Completely douse butts and ashes with water before throwing them away, as they can smolder and cause a fire.
