Police are asking parents to talk to your kids about what to do if you call 911 by mistake after responding to 34 dropped 911 calls this weekend alone.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police responded to 34 dropped 9-1-1 calls over the weekend.
They are asking parents to talk to your children and remind them to be cautious of dialing 911 in error. 25 of the dropped calls this weekend happened on Saturday alone.
If the caller hangs up the phone after mis-dialing 911, and dispatchers are unable to reconnect with the caller, police are required to investigate and it is treated as a potentially life-threatening emergency.
What should you do?
- If you or your child dial 911 by mistake, do not hang up. Please stay on the line, notify the 911 call taker of the error and answer any follow up questions they may ask.
- Do not dial 911 for general inquiries or reports. 911 should only be called in the event of an emergency. If you need to speak to a police officer but it is not an emergency, please call 519-537-2323 instead.
- Have a conversation with your child about dialing 911 in error. Teach them that doing so takes up valuable resources from someone who could be experiencing a real emergency.
- Lock your phone when it is in your pocket or purse.
- If you are giving your child an old phone as a hand-me-down, know that even without a data or phone plan it can still call 911.
