Distracted or inattentive driving has been the number one cause of collisions in Woodstock this summer.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police are going to be out in full force this Labour Day Long Weekend.
They will be looking to keep everyone safe after a tragic summer on our local roadways. Police responded to 122 collisions this summer where 11 people sustained injuries and one person died. In total 44 charges were laid, 11 collisions involved a motorcycle, bicycle, Ebike or pedestrian.
Community Resource Officer Nikki VanLeeuwen tells Heart FM they are encouraging everyone to slow down, especially in residential areas.
"We are doing a blitz focusing on school zones, trying to get the message out that people need to slow down, so far we have been laying a lot of charges, which has been a bit of a dissappointment for the Police Department."
She adds that the data shows that a lot of the crashes are happening on Fridays and during commuter times in the afternoon. Distracted or inattentive driving has been the number one cause of collisions in Woodstock this summer. Other issues include improper lane changes, improper passing, failing to yield, not stopping at stop signs and speeding.
Driving Safety Tips:
- Don’t drive while tired – Many people want to travel through the night when going away for the long weekend, just remember to be alert when you get behind the wheel.
- Look for a less travelled route – less traffic means less opportunity for collisions.
- Don’t drink and drive or drive high.
- Buckle Up- not wearing seatbelt can cause serious preventable injury.
- Keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.
