Victims, who have had their intimate images shared without their consent are asked to come forward and share their experience as part of an investigation.
WOODSTOCK - Recent stories circulating about local women discovering intimate images of themselves on the internet without their consent, has prompted Woodstock police to open an investigation.
Police are encouraging any victim to come forward and share their story and know that being a victim of situations like this can not be ignored. The Woodstock police opened the investigation on March 26th, after learning that adult females in the area has their images shared without consent. The investigation comes as a reminder that authorities are stressing all too often, to refrain from sharing intimate images.
By law everyone who knowingly publishes, distributes, transmits, sells, makes available or advertises an intimate image of a person knowing that the person depicted in the image did not give their consent to that conduct, is considered guilty of a crime. It would be considered an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for no more than five years.
There are blurred lines when it comes to the definition of what an intimate image is. The Woodstock Police say an intimate image means a visual recording of a person made by any means including a photographic, film or video recording. The material would show the person being nude, exposing his or her genital organs or anal region or her breasts. This also includes the person engaged in explicit sexual activity.
If at the time of the recording or images captured the subject had an expectation of privacy, then an offence has been committed.
The Woodstock Police say their door is open and they want to know if there are more victims in this area.
