WOODSTOCK - Local veterans are being remembered in Woodstock.
A commemorative crosswalk has been painted at the cenotaph in Victoria Park, at the corner of Graham and Buller Streets. It features a red and white striped pattern, with the silhouette of a soldier and the phrase "Lest We Forget" at each end.
Director of Public Works, Jeff Molenhuis explains how this came to be.
"Similar styles of crosswalks have been installed in many cities across Ontario. We consulted with our local Royal Canadian Legion Branch #55 to ensure this is a functional, respectful and meaningful memorial”"
The crosswalk comes as the Woodstock cenotaph celebrates 100 years. It honours the local service members who died during the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and the war in Afghanistan. It also goes along with the banners that are hung on light poles downtown, honouring 60 local veterans.
