WOODSTOCK - A Woodstock woman has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a 26 year old Oxford County man.
The man died from a fentanyl overdose on January 29th. Detective Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen explains why they charged this woman with manslaughter, on top of charges for drug trafficking.
"Based on the evidence from the investigation and in consultation with the Crown Attorneys office, all of the investigation, the witnesses, all the information lead to that specific charge, related to the fentanyl overdose."
After an extensive investigation police have charged 34 year old Samantha Vanbelleghem with the following offences;
· Traffic in a Schedule 1 substance (fentanyl)
· Manslaughter
· Fail to Comply with Probation x2
· Fail to comply with Undertaking
Vanbelleghem had a court appearance and was held in custody today. Her next court appearance is on June 5, 2020.
Fentanyl continues to be a serious issue in our City and County. Woodstock Police is committed to the education and enforcement of drug use in this community. VanLeeuwen says this is a serious charge and they are taking these matters seriously.
"I think you can take a look at the Fentanyl abuse and misuse that is happening and killing people in our Province and internationally. Our courts are taking this very seriously, so it is a very serious charge obviously, serious investigation and I think that people in our community, court systems have to be accountable to the community and what's happening, so it is being taken very seriously."
