World Hepatitis Day

Oxford County Public Health is recognizing World Hepatitis Day and reminding everyone to get vaccinated

It's World Hepatitis Day and Oxford County Public Health wants to bring attention to Hepatitis infections.

An estimated 600 000 Canadians have Hepatitis B or C, and many of them are unaware of it. You can get vaccinated to protect yourself from Hepatitis A and B, but they don't have a shot for Hepatitis C and your best bet is to get treatment. Hepatitis is a virus that attacks the liver and can lead to liver damage, cirrhosis and liver cancer. Public Health Nurse Lisa Gillespie says one of the biggest risks with Hepatitis is when you go on vacation.

"We have all seen those commercials where people are having a drink and the ice cube melts and unfortunately it can have Hepatitis A in it and you can get quite ill from that. And unfortunately they don't have the same stringent policies as far as sterilization procedures if you are ever in need of some kind of a procedure while you are away."

Gillespie says most people in the younger generation have already been vaccinated for Hepatitis B. However if you are unsure or want to book an appointment you can call Oxford County Public Health.

Symptoms are often vague and mild and may not be obvious until significant liver damage has occurred. Symptoms may include fatigue, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice), and dark urine.

Oxford County residents who want to book an appointment for testing or find out if they are eligible for Hepatitis A and B vaccinations can call Oxford County Public Health at 519-539-9800 ext. 3490.
