Students at Winchester Street Public School were thrilled with their morning snack today, delivered by the local Zehrs grocery store.
WOODSTOCK - Zehrs in Woodstock delivered breakfast to over 400 students at Winchester Street Public School.
The delivery was done in celebration of Raise a Food Lover week. Each student was given a snack bag containing an apple, granola bar, cheese snack and water. Store Manager Kris Karnowski says Zehrs is working to encourage, empower, and engage children to develop lifelong nutritious eating habits: from choosing, to prepping, to enjoying food through the program.
“We’re proud to celebrate Raise a Food Lover with the students of Winchester Street Public School. We hope students learned something new, including how good healthy food can taste, and share what they've learned today with their family for continued success.”
Principal of Winchester Street Public School Lisa D'ambrose says the kids were absolutely thrilled to receive the delivery today.
"The Manager Kris talked to each of the classes about the different types of minerals, why we need to drink water, what was good about protein, why cheese was a good option and a little bit about the granola bar and the things that were and weren't in the granola bar. Our kids were absolutely thrilled every time it happens and it is a nice change from the normal morning snack we give them every day."
Winchester Street Public School is also a recipient of the President's Choice Children's Charity School Nutrition Grant. The grant supports their daily meal program that helps to ensure students are well-fed and ready to learn.
Karnowski says they are happy to support these programs.
"Zehrs Woodstock is proud to support President’s Choice Children’s Charity through in-store fundraising to help support local schools."
Principal D'ambrose explains the Daily Meal Program.
"We work with the Health Unit and VON and ever year we get a grant to provide a healthy snack. At Winchester we have chosen to provide a healthy snack every morning and we have volunteers who run the program out of our kitchen and they follow a particular menu. In the afternoon, we have bowls of fruit and vegetables in the hallway that kids can choose, so we actually have two snacks a day. In the past Zehrs has actually given us food cards as well, on top of the grant they provide."
Thanks to Zehrs Woodstock for the great breakfast this morning for all our students. Our bellies are full and we know lots about eating healthy @zehrswoodstock #zehrs pic.twitter.com/aYxa4IrGft
