Starting on November 25th a campaign of 16 days of activism will bring attention to the issue of violence against women.
WOODSTOCK - The Zonta Club of Woodstock and the Domestic Assault Review Team (D.A.R.T) are teaming up for the Zonta Says No Campaign to end violence against women.
They will be launching 16 days of activism starting on November 25th with the lighting of the trees at the Woodstock Police Service at 5:30 p.m. Campaign partners will be at the launch handing out orange ribbons and cookies. President of the Zonta Club of Woodstock Sheena Poole tells Heart FM they are just trying to create some awareness.
"Unfortunately some people don't believe that is happening in our community and it is, so this is a small way and trying to be positive about bringing this awareness and that violence against woman is not appropriate and we are trying to reach out to the younger people as well."
Poole says the tree lighting is a great event to show your support for the women in Oxford County who have been a victim of domestic violence. Poole says this is actually a world wide campaign.
"This is just not a local campaign, this is a global one. So we take Zonta Says No and the Orange Ribbons from the United Nations Secretary Generals campaign of Orange Day. On the 25th we are going to be lighting trees at the police station, so we are also partnering with DART and Survivor Voices - so Survivor Voices are going to be lighting the trees purple in support of their campaign Shine the Light, while we are going to be lighting up orange lights around the police station for our campaign."
