Trees in front of the Woodstock Police Station will be lit at 5:30pm to acknowledge activism against gender violence.
WOODSTOCK - The Zonta Says No Campaign kicks off tonight by lighting up the trees outside the Woodstock Police station.
The Woodstock Police Service is happy to be a part of it, and Constable Tyler Allard says says the partnership between Zonta and the Domestic Assault Review Team is creating awareness for the very serious issue. "Both agencies have a lot to offer. Obviously involving different initiatives and just the partnership with Zonta and the D.A.R.T. Team seems to be working quite well to raise awareness for gender based violence."
Allard says domestic assault is a problem here in Woodstock. "It is a problem, not only here but in different areas as well. Domestic violence is an issue that we are combating, that we are trying to put an end to. And we have events like this to raise awareness and let people know that they have the right to come to police and provide information regarding that."
This is the start of the Zonta Says No campaign of 16 days of activism against gender violence. Today's event coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The tree lighting is at 5:30 p.m.
Orange lights on the tree represent Zonta Club of Woodstock and the UN "UniTE" Campaign while the purple lights are for Survivors Voices Oxford and for "Shine the Light" London.
